In addition to mining the embryonic inclinations and aspirations of lespecial, and rinsing the processes and concepts behind the masterful new album, Jonny G rabbit holes include the timeless classical opus “Hall of the Mountain King”, Flying Lotus, Aphex Twin, Lettuce/Break Science, White Zombie, Jackson Whalen, plus assorted homies, ancient or otherwise. As such, this conversation takes a number of twists and turns, historical and philosophical alike. Jonny G (gov’t name Jon Grusauskas) reveals himself wise beyond his years his inspirations run the gamut.
In 2003, he would release his second and third studio albums, Take Me to Your Leader, under the stage name King Geedorah, and Vaudeville Villain under the name Viktor Vaughn. Jonny G feels like my ancient homie already! We hop in the wayback machine for a properly-blazed, bi-coastal joyride thru the annals of lespecial, then burrow a bit deeper. In September 1999, Dumile would release his debut studio album Operation: Doomsday under a new stage name, MF DOOM, wearing a mask similar to that of Marvel Comics super-villain Doctor Doom. I’m new to this band, but their music and mystique is in my blood.
Their latest LP is a sonorous slab of sound-art, if I do say so myself. Released in March 2009, ‘BORN LIKE THIS.’ is still MF DOOM’s last solo album. And, in 2004, the second MF DOOM album MM.Food was released by the Minnesota-based label Rhymesayers Entertainment. In 2004 he released a follow-up LP, Venomous Villain (also called VV2). and the fans’ jubilant reception of Ancient Homies. Also in 2003, Dumile released the LP Vaudeville Villain under the moniker Viktor Vaughn (another play on Doctor Doom, whose real name is Victor von Doom). Previously known as Zev Luv X from K.M.D., Doom takes the listener on a wild ride littered with smooth samples, rugged beatscapes and always-fresh rhymes, interspersed with cinematic skits and charisma galore. Lespecial, the Nor’easter trio who blur lines and blast genres beyond recognition, are riding a huge wave of momentum after a wildly-successful NYE livestream. An undeniable classic, MF Dooms debut solo album is overflowing with instantly likeable production and complex yet casual wordplay.
